PETALING JAYA- The decision by the Selangor Mentri Besar to
personally handle the challenging portfolio of Islamic affairs is a
correct move, said a Selangor PAS leader.
Its deputy commissioner Khalid Samad dispelled allegations that the party had been sidelined when Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, from PKR, announced that he would take over Datuk Dr Hasan Ali’s Islamic affairs portfolio although Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi was appointed to replace him.
The Shah Alam MP said it was unfair to thrust Dr Ahmad, a new person, into a challenging portfolio with an impending general election given the recent controversies.
Khalid, in a press statement, lambasted “ignorant groups” for claiming that Dr Ahmad’s portfolio was an embarrassment to PAS.
“For PAS, Islam is relevant in all portfolios including youth.
“The portfolio is very meaningful to PAS, especially since the majority of Selangor voters are below 40,” he said.
Khalid announced a minor shake-up recently, whereby Dr Hasan’s Islamic affairs, Malay customs, infrastructure and public amenities portfolio were split with him taking over all but the Malay customs duties.
Dr Hasan was sacked from PAS following his controversial statements deemed damaging to the party.
Dr Ahmad was sworn in on Wednesday.
State PAS commissioner Dr Rani Osman, who had been widely tipped to replace Dr Hasan, was appointed chairman of the Selangor Micro Credit Scheme for the Rural Poor.
Khalid Samad commended Dr Rani for being a gentlemen throughout the process.
In Shah Alam, Dr Hasan criticised PAS, claiming the party had turned into a pak turut (yes man).
The former Selangor PAS commissioner said it was sad that the Islamic affairs portfolio, which had been PAS’ pride, was taken away by a component party of Pakatan Rakyat.
The Gombak Setia assemblyman also pointed out that during the formation of the Pakatan government in Selangor after the 2008 general election, party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had requested him and the PAS leadership to ensure that the Islamic affairs portfolio be safeguarded by the party.
