U.S. ready to share anti-terrorism experience: Ambassador

IPOH: The United States is ready to share with Malaysia its experience in formulating anti-terrorism law, said its ambassador to Malaysia, Paul W. Jones.
"Each country has a different approach in combating terrorism or terrrorist groups," Jones said after paying a courtesy call on Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir here on Monday.
The ambassador said he heard that Malaysia's Home Ministry would be looking to the UK and US anti-terrorism laws to replace the ISA, but the decision would be Malaysia's.

Himalayan quake deaths rise as night falls

GUWAHATI, India (Reuters): Rescuers dug through mudslides on roads to isolated Himalayan villages on Monday in search of survivors after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake killed 63 people in India, Nepal and the Chinese region of Tibet.
Soldiers and police pulled victims from rubble as night closed in and the number of victims climbed to 35 in the "Shangri-la" northeastern Indian state of Sikkim, the epicentre of Sunday night's quake felt more than miles away in Delhi.

Japanese urge "farewell" to nuclear power six months after quake

TOKYO (Reuters): Sixty thousand protesters gathered in central Tokyo on Monday demanding an end to Japan's reliance on nuclear power, six month's after the world's worst nuclear accident in 25 years.
Japan has banned people from within 20 km (12 miles) of the Fukushima Daiichi plant in northeast Japan, which had its reactor cooling systems knocked out by an earthquake and tsunami on March 11, triggering meltdowns.

Court to hear PAS veep's suit vs police, govt on Oct 4

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here has set Oct 4 to hear PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar's suit against the police and government for alleged wrongful arrest and detention during the July 9 illegal rally.

Judge Harminder Singh Dhaliwal fixed the date in chambers after meeting with Senior Federal Counsel Iznan Izhak, who represented the defendants, and Mahfuz's lawyer Muhammad Faiz Fadzil on Monday, Sept 19.

CANBERRA: Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard's controversial plan to send asylum seekers to Malaysia hit a new hurdle on Monday, Sept 19 when conservative opponents said they would not back her changes to immigration laws in parliament.
In a fresh blow to Gillard's troubled one-seat government, which is struggling in opinion polls, opposition leader Tony Abbott said a compromise offered by Gillard to win his support after the high court blocked the Malaysia pact was inferior in its human rights safeguards.
