Saudi Arabia, Malaysia top spots for migrant workers

Jakarta Post
JAKARTA, Oct 3: Despite numerous cases of abuse, murder and executions of migrant workers, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia remain two of the top four destinations for Indonesian migrant workers.

According to the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry’s study on Indonesian migrant worker destinations, the other top two were Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Reyna Usman, an official from the ministry’s directorate general of migrant workers’ development and placement, said the evaluation had been ongoing since June and assessed various aspects, especially migrant worker protection. Each of those countries, she said, had migrant worker protection laws. “We will send them to those countries or the countries that have already signed an agreement with us,” Reyna said on Sunday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

She added that Taiwan and Hong Kong had better policies and regulations governing migrant worker protection compared to other countries. Even though there were still problems related to migrant workers there, the number of cases of violence against migrant workers was low.

Malaysia was still considered a positive placement destination due to easy access and similarities in both culture and language.

However, Reyna said the government would be more selective in determining which employers to send workers to.

For Saudi Arabia, Reyna said the government there was quite responsive to suggestions from the Indonesian government to improve their protection of migrant workers.

“Saudi Arabia is still the best placement destination in the Middle East. It’s our duty to lessen the problems, especially violence."
