Don't smile just yet, PAS tells Kg Baru folks

Harakahdaily
Oct 3: Despite the government's sudden withdrawal of the much-criticised Kampung Baru Development Bill, PAS, which had been campaigning for the bill's cancellation, has cautioned people in Kampung Baru not to break into celebration yet as there was a new bill on the cards.

Federal Territories and Urban Well-being minister Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin announced the bill's cancellation.
If allowed to go through the parliament, the bill would give Putrajaya full authority and immunity from legal proceedings with regards to developing the 111-year-old Malay settlement which sits in one of the capital's most expensive plots of land.

PAS vice president and Kubang Kerian member of parliament Salahuddin Ayub (left) warned that the tabling of the new Kampung Baru Development Bill was another act of ignoring the views of stakeholders.

“It is not appropriate that the new law is inserted without the minister calling the secretariat to draft the bill,” he told a press conference at the parliament lobby today.

Salahuddin however said PAS needed another week to review the new bill before taking a stand on the matter.

His colleague Mahfuz Omar, who is Pokok Sena MP, meanwhile demanded that the new bill be debated and discussed with representatives from Kampung Baru, especially the Kampung Baru Management Board.

“The government should have referred to the stakeholders in Kampung Baru before tabling the new law because it is specifically meant for them. If you table straight in Parliament, the ones who are going to debate are not the stakeholders, so it will not give them a real picture,” said Mahfuz.

The protest against the Kampung Baru Development Bill was spearheaded by the late Titiwangsa MP Dr Lo’Lo Ghazali, who succumbed to cancer in July.
