Selangor blasts minister's help for Israeli, stresses pro-Palestine policy

Harakahdaily
Nov 1: The Selangor government has blasted Youth and Sports minister Shabery Cheek who personally intervened with the airport's immigration to allow an Israeli national into the country, for trying to lay blame on the state government.

Shabery (right) earlier told Parliament that the Selangor state governent was a sponsor of "The Challenger Muaythai", a reality Thai kickboxing show attended by the Israeli participant Ilya Grad.
Shabery claimed that his ministry was only involved in approving the event.

Selangor's Tourism, Consumer Affairs and Environment exco Elizabeth Wong however said Shabery was trying to deflect attention away from his personal intervention to bend immigration rules.

“The Youth and Sports Minister should not point fingers at others, knowing full well immigration matters are under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government,” she said.

"Pakatan Rakyat policy is clear. We believe that, in the spirit of solidarity with the Palestinian people, Malaysia should have no diplomatic, trade, cultural or sports ties with the Israeli Zionist regime,” she stressed.

Wong (left) added that the state government did not organise the competition or take part in the selection of participants. She said Selangor also did not sign any support documents to allow any citizen from the Zionist state enter Malaysia.

“If we had prior information, we would have firmly told the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Immigration Department not to grant entry," added Wong.

Harakahdaily earlier reported that Shabeery personally intervened to allow 24-year old Grad enter the country with a special visa. Grad later stood his ground insisting that the Israeli 'Star of David' flag be waved for the television camera.
