Horses' Mouths - September 28

GST and BN’s victory
If the government continues to dilly-dally, they will keep on paying for the readiness costs... that is why Najib needs to be brave — if he feels the GST will be key to overhauling the economy, then say it. It is not about popularity here but it is about business certainty... this issue has dragged on for six to seven years. We do not reject the GST but we are questioning its viability when only 1.7 million Malaysians are qualified taxpayers. This means most Malaysians belong to the lower-income category.
Rafizi Ramli, PKR strategic director

Perkasa’s mob

The excuse that they were there just to hand over a memorandum is unacceptable. If they really wanted to do that, why throw stones and bottles at the crowd? This was a Hari Raya dinner as well. There were women, children and senior citizens among the crowd.
MK Ibrahim, Seremban PAS chief, on a Perkasa mob which disrupted a PAS dinner-cum-ceramah last weekend

Subpoena I categorically deny any notion that my wife and I conspired in “mereka-rekakan ataupun mengada-adakan” anything which were very detrimental to the respondent (Anwar).
Najib Razak, in his affidavit to support his application to set aside the subpoena compelling him to testify in the trial

I’m not a relevant witness in this trial, therefore the subpoena against me should be set aside.
Rosmah Mansor, prime minister’s wife

Corruption and high income nation

You cannot find any high-income countries that rank high in corruption.
Idris Jala, Pemandu CEO, telling corporate captains to remain vigilant against corruption as it was a key factor in deciding Malaysia’s economic fate

Kampung Baru’s bill

They strongly oppose because the Bill is not favourable to the landowners... And their suggestions during the lab session in Malacca in 2010 were ignored. In fact, the first reading was done without their knowledge and consent.
Salahuddin Ayub, PAS vice president, on Kampung Baru Development Bill

Sarbaini’s verdict It beggars belief that having voluntarily gone to the MACC’s Cheras office, Sarbaini would then try to leave by crawling out the third-floor window. There is also no explanation as to how and why 22 hours of crucial CCTV footage was erased, which covered the period during which he died.
N Surendran, PKR vice president, on verdict which ruled that senior Customs officer Ahmad Sarbaini Mohamad’s death by “misadventure”

Mahathir and Lynas The contract ... is on arm's length terms and its total value of approximately RM9.1 million represents a very small fraction of Kencana Petroluem's group's annual revenues. It is highly inappropriate... to suggest that Mahathir would either know or care about a relatively small and unremarkable contract entered into by a subsidiary of Kencana Petroleum Bhd.

Lynas Corporation Ltd, dismissing claim that Dr Mahathir Mohamad supports its rare earth processing plant in Pahang because his eldest son Mokzhani has a stake in the project
