China toddler on 'edge of death'

The Telegraph
GUANGZHOU, Oct 20: Two-year-old Wang Yue (pic) was run over by two cars last Thursday in a market in the southern province of Guangdong. Closed-circuit television footage of 18 people walking past her body without helping her has ignited outrage both inside China and worldwide.

On Thursday, Su Lei, the director of the Guangzhou Military Hospital's Intensive Care Unit said the toddler could die "at any moment". He said: "I cannot tell how long she has left. We are still trying to save her, but the scenario is getting worse and worse."In a statement to the media, the hospital said there was "no sign of her brain functions recovering after 48 hours of continuous monitoring." It added that after consulting with specialists in Beijing, Yue's medical team had concluded that she is now nearly brain-dead.

"Other key organs are now deteriorating. Her heart is failing and on Thursday she suffered a swelling in her lungs and, at 11.43am, her heart stopped beating. We managed to save her after 40 minutes of resuscitation," the statement said.

The girl's parents, Wang Chichang and Qu Feifei, have been standing vigil at a hotel next to the hospital. Mr Wang said they refused to give up hope and would continue to believe in Yue's medical team.

"We have the best experts here at this hospital caring for her. Neither the hospital or the parents will give up," said Dr Su.

Meanwhile, newspapers in Guangdong reported that another young child had been hit by a car in a market in the same area. The accident happened in Shunde, a district of Foshan, at noon on Wednesday.

The 20-month-old boy, named as Xiao Jie, was running with an empty basket near his grandfather's store and was hit by a reversing car near the entrance to the market. Xiao Jie suffered a broken leg but one of the market workers managed to stop the driver before the car rolled over him.
