Horses’ Mouths - September 22

Uncool

It is enough for now to say that we have filed an application to set aside the subpoena on behalf of Datuk Seri Najib and his wife.
Salehuddin Saidin, counsel for prime minister Najib Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor, on the couple’s attempt to set aside subpoenas compelling them to appear as witnesses at Anwar Ibrahim's on-going sodomy trial

Now he is filing the application to have it set aside ... why shy away? Everybody knows Saiful met him at his residence and now he is trying to shy away. Of course this will delay matters and we have to deal with it. Such actions by Najib are uncool.

A chance on PSC

We have given our members full mandate to represent Pakatan and state their priorities, collaborate and see the workings of the committee and decide if it is a delay tactic. We are giving the government a chance, we don't want to be presumptuous.
Anwar Ibrahim, saying PR will participate in the parliamentary select committee (PSC) on electoral reforms despite earlier boycott threats

Lynas
No matter how many investigations and studies are made, the protests will go on. It is not about danger to health. It is about defeating the government in the coming election. We should be careful with radioactive material. But we should not allow political activists and non-genuine environmentalists deprive us of the economic benefits rare earth offers through unsubstantiated scare stories.
Dr Mahathir Mohamad, supporting the contentious Lynas rare-earth processing plant

History goes to court

This case is about the interpretation of history and should be resolved through dialogue and debate, not by the court. However, since it is a court case, we have to face it.
Mohamad Sabu, PAS deputy president, after being charged in a Butterworth Sessions Court for challenging the official account of the 1950 Bukit Kepong incident

Johor’s seats negotiation

There has been some small flare-ups, but we have given reminders for negotiations to continue.
Mustafa Ali, PAS secretary general, saying negotiations in the Johor state are still ongoing, and that the “flare-ups” are negligible

No apology

We act according to the law. I cannot be emotional about that...It's not that we do not sympathise, a life has been lost, of course we sympathise. But we are a professional body and I act according to the law.
Ismail Omar, Inspector General of Police, saying there would be no police apology to the family of 14-year-old Aminulrasyid Amzah despite a police officer being convicted

'True nationalists speak English'
In fact, it is true nationalists who want their people to possess more knowledge, not just be able to speak in Malay. It’s not a question of lacking nationalism.
Dr Mahathir Mohamad, throwing support behind the pro-English lobby, calling them “true nationalists” for wanting to ensure Malaysia kept abreast with the latest scientific findings

Should have...

In regards to the statement made by Dato Seri Nazri Aziz regarding my reform plans, I want to state that I was very clear with the reforms I wanted to bring. However if a leader is clear in his mind that what he wants to do is right, he must see it through. Perhaps when I was in office I should have been more forceful about it considering the resistance I was facing. This is what I hope Dato’ Seri Najib would do if he is clear with what he wants.
Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, former prime minister, admitting he was not tough with his reforms and changes while in office
