October 13, 2011 It has always been the dream and wish of many Arabs that everyone should speak the same classical Arabic. Arabic dialects are considered by some Arab linguists to be a degenerate form of the language of the Koran, or of the Arabic supposedly spoken by the Prophet Muhammad. In reality, however, Arabic dialects have always existed, even during the time of the Prophet Muhammad. It would actually have been an anomaly if the Arabian Peninsula would have been a homogeneous linguistic area.

Iranian leader warns of plot to divide Sunnis and Shias

TEHRAN, Oct 13: Leader of Iran's Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has urged Muslim clerics to be vigilant against plots aimed at creating divisions between Sunnis and Shias and weakening Islam. “Shia and Sunni clerics must remain very vigilant about plots, and find ways to counter enemies' schemes through holding joint meetings and cooperation,” Ayatollah Khamenei (pic) said on Wednesday.

Within a year, 300% increase in new voters

Oct 13: Even as the controversy surrounding various revelations about electoral fraud continues, minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Aziz dropped a shocking figure of newly registered voters, showing a three-fold increase in 2010 compared to 2009. In his parliamentary reply to Bukit Bendera member of parliament Liew Chin Tong, Nazri (right) revealed that a total of 820,156 people had been registered as voters in 2010 compared to 276,621 in 2009. According to Nazri, the sharp increase was not surprising and attributed it to rising political awareness among Malaysians. He said it was usual to see low number of registration after a general election, adding that the number of new voters would gather pace "when the election is around the corner". Nazri added that a total of RM500,000 was allocated for new voter registration exercise.

CANBERRA, Oct 13: The Australian government has shelved plans for offshore processing of asylum-seekers, announcing it will allow boat people to live and work in the community as detention centres overflow. Under a plan announced by Prime Minister Julia Gillard today, all asylum-seekers will be processed on Australian soil with community detention and bridging visas provided to those unable to be processed within the existing detention centre network.

PAS: Come out clean now over 'mystery buses'

Oct 13: PAS is demanding immediate answers from the Home Ministry over the presence of some 200 foreigners ferried in several buses at a resort near Putrajaya yesterday, believed to be 'instant' recipients of Malaysian citizenship.

Following a tick-off yesterday, Johor PAS Youth managed to trail six buses from Johor carrying Indonesians to Putrajaya early morning.

The PAS workers also saw the presence of police and National Registration Department officers at the said resort.

820,156 pemilih baru pada 2010

KUALA LUMPUR, 13 Okt: Dewan Rakyat diberitahu seramai 820,156 orang mendaftar sebagai pemilih baru bagi tahun 2010 berbanding 276,621 pada tahun 2009.

Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz dalam jawapan bertulis kepada soalan ahli Parlimen Bukit Bendera, Liew Chin Tong berkata, jumlah permohonan pendaftaran baru ini berbeza dari tahun ke tahun kerana ia bergantung kepada kesedaran warganegara Malaysia yang berkelayakan untuk mendaftar sebagai pemilih.
