AN Ipswich man sat down and enjoyed a family lunch moments after raping his step-granddaughter, a court has been told.
The Brisbane District Court was told the man, then aged between 35 and 40, sexually abused the girl over a four year period from the time she was nine.
The man, now aged 41 and who cannot be named to protect his step-granddaughter's identity, was today jailed for three-years after pleading guilty to six sex offences committed between January 1, 2006, and April 22 last year.
However, the man is likely to spend less than a year behind bars after the sentencing judge ordered the three year term be suspended after he has served 10-months in actual custody.
Prosecutor Chris Minnery said the grandfather first molested the girl by fondling her as she slept in a bed at his Raceview home.
He said the most serious attack occurred after pair returned from a family outing to the Booval Fair Shopping Centre.
The court was told the man digitally raped the girl when they returned from the shops earlier than the rest of the family.
Mr Minnery said the attack stopped when the man heard his wife's car enter the property.
He said moments after the rape the man and the child sat down to lunch with the rest of the family.
The court was told the girl was again molested as the grandfather was packing up to move to Central Queensland.
The man pleaded guilty on August 24 to five counts of indecent treatment of child in his care, four of which were on a child under 12, and one count of rape.
The Crown argued the man should be jailed for three years, suspended after 12-months, while lawyers for the man argued a lesser term was within range.
Judge Tony Rafter, SC, said the child victim, in a victim impact statement tendered to the court, claims "the abuse made'' her feel ''angry and sad more often'' then it should and had caused on-going problems in her relationship with her mother.
Judge Rafter, in addition to jailing the man, sentenced him to three years probation.
