Nov 28: Saying it is unnecessary to amend the constitution to guarantee a Malay prime minister, DAP said Malaysians had long accepted the political reality in the country that the prime minister’s post should be held by a Malay.
DAP secretary general Lim Guan Eng (pic) was reacting to a spate of comments on the matter sparked by a tactical challenge by PKR Youth leader Shamsul Iskandar to UMNO to amend the Constitution to prove the latter's claim of defending Malay political dominance.
“There is no non-Malay having any prime ministerial ambition," stressed the popular Penang chief minister, who added that amending the Constitution to include such a clause would only "make non-Malays look like second class citizen"
Lim also dismissed the accusation by UMNO deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin that DAP leaders were "anti-Malay", adding that the party had always fought for all races. Instead, Lim said UMNO was the enemy of all Malaysians, Malay and non-Malay.
“UMNO is not only a threat to Malays but to every Malaysian for continuously violating human rights, indulging in corruption and in power abuse,” he said.
He said UMNO's 'fear mongering' was just to divert attention from numerous financial and corruption scandals amounting to billions of ringgit as revealed in the Auditor General’s Report 2010.
Lim also rubbished the claim that Malays were losing political power, pointing out that they dominate many critical sectors.
“The civil servants, police and army are under Malay control and in critical sectors such as insurance, banking, automotive, ports and highway, there are Malay entrepreneurs and companies.
"In politics, the prime minister and deputy prime minister are Malays, all Menteri Besar and chief ministers are also Malays except Penang,” he reminded. |
